What
is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy
is a system of diagnosis and treatment which emphasises the structural
integrity of the body and how structural and mechanical problems
may lead to ill health and disease.
What
to Expect
When coming in for a consultation the osteopath will take personal
details, name and address etc. and then a full history of the current
complaint and past history. They will ask questions about the patients
general health and any other matters which may be relevant.
Following
this, an examination will take place and the patient will usually
be asked to remove clothing so that the osteopath can see and examine
the body. Patients should therefore wear underwear they are comfortable
in. The examination includes an assessment of the patients posture
which can often contribute to the symptoms. The patient will be
asked to move in certain ways and various tests will be carried
out.
When
the examination is complete, the diagnosis will be discussed with
the patient and appropriate treatment will be carried out. Advice
will be given regarding lifestyle, diet and exercise. If the patient
is not suitable for osteopathic treatment they will be advised to
consult their GP or referred elsewhere.
Techniques
Used
Massage works directly on muscles and other soft tissues to
help them relax and restore elasticity. Joint articulation rhythmically
stretches joints to improve flexibility and circulation.
Thrusts
improve the mobility of joints and by reflex reaction help to relax
muscles. They may result in the 'click' which has become characteristic
of osteopathic treatment.
After
Treatment
People often start to feel better either immediately or within
a day or two. Some people may feel soreness either later the same
day or the next morning. This common response tends to lessen in
subsequent treatments and may be eased by the use of ice packs.
If you have any concerns regarding your response to treatment you
should contact the practice to discuss your symptoms with the osteopath.
The
number of treatments will vary from case to case and will be discussed
at the initial consultation.
